Romance in 1940's Havana: A Tropical Cuban Wedding Inspiration Shoot

We all need a little tropical getaway sometimes. I’d be hard pressed to find someone who hates the beach! This styled shoot was about bringing that tropical atmosphere to the wedding scene - with an elegant vintage touch.

By Gloria Vazquez-Abrams

Inspired by the romantic Spanish style of 1940's Havana, this vintage Cuban wedding inspirational shoot brings the classic tropical paradise to life. Finer, classic elements of the decade contrast against bold, bright and fun colours of Cuban influence, set in the historic heritage site of the Evergreen Brick Works.

For this inspirational shoot, we picked a historic heritage site in the Don River Valley Park of Toronto. We wanted to highlight the elegance and splendour of 1940’s Cuba, and the backdrop of the Evergreen Brick Works really allowed for our chosen colours to shine; bold colours, like the teal, fuchsia and banana yellow from our shoot, will always stand out better against a “blank slate” venue. Island florals and greenery (here, curated and designed by BLUUMBLVD), when paired with other bright elements, like textured linens and fun candles, will provide a lush island feel.

To bring out the ornate and European-inspired styles of the decade, relevant to 1940’s Cuba at the time, Victorian-esque and opulent white and gold accents were carefully selected to pair with the bolder, bright accents. A pop of burgundy and champagne added a slight sultry and sophisticated touch.

No wedding is complete without a sweets display. Ours, created by La Rose Bakery, was adorned with Cuban and Spanish flavours. What’s a Cuban wedding cake without some banana chocolate spongecake and chocolate ganache? And don’t forget to pass the dulce de leche cheesecakes, coconut cream fruit tartlettes or the mango mousse parfait! Can I say, SWOON?

To put that finishing touch, we added a cigar bar with a side of Cuban rum! Our display, with the help of La Casa De Fuma, was complete with humidors, cutters and authentic cigar cases. Perfect for any authentic vintage occasion!
